Neon signage has an unmistakable bright light source. The bright light is created through the application of phosphor coating to the inside of a section of glass tube. The tubing is heated until it is malleable and then moulded into shape and aligned to a pattern containing the appropriate graphics or lettering. The bright intense colours are produced when the glass tubes are filled with gas, electrifying the phosphor.

Neon tubing is used widely in illuminated advertising signage, as well as architectural signage and feature lighting. LED lights are the latest technology in energy efficient lighting, using approximately 85 per cent less energy than halogen or incandescent lighting. LED is an acronym for ‘Light Emitting Diode’, a semiconductor device that converts electricity into light.

As it is extremely energy efficient, LED signage has many advantages over neon signage. LED uses less power and is more reliable so maintenance costs are generally lower. LED lights last 25,000 to 50,000 hours so they also have a considerably longer life span than other types of lighting. Finally, LED lights have a better visual effect. LED has greater luminosity and, unlike neon, the light is directed forwards so the front of the sign is brighter than the sides.
